“Toilet paper’s free why not pad and tampons?”
Across the world there are woman who have enough money to pay for their sanitary products but there’s also some women/girls who can’t. These can include homeless people, people struggling with addiction/money etc. It is important for women and girls to be able to use sanitary products such as pads and tampons. After all women/girls can’t stop their period so why should they pay for it?
What has Lidl done to help woman/girls who cant afford period products?
Lidl Ireland has started providing free boxes of sanitary pads or tampons to girls and women as part of a new programme targeting period poverty. It is the launch of a new coupon scheme that will enable girls and women in Ireland to access free sanitary products using the Lidl Plus app each month.
From April 19th 2021 to now, women are be able to sign up to receive the monthly coupon which they can use from May 3rd in 168 stores nationwide. Lidl also is making donations of sanitary products to the Simon Communities of Ireland to ensure people experiencing homelessness, and who may not have access to a smartphone, could also access the free hygiene women products.
Scotland being the first country to make period products free!
In November 2020, Scotland became the first country in the world to make period products free for anyone who needs them, including in public places, while in February, New Zealand announced all its schools would offer free period products from June of 2021.
What about the other supermarkets?
Tesco’s community fund has made more than €5 million in donations to over 20,000 projects nationwide, including Homeless Period Ireland. Aldi, Dunnes Stores and Supervalu did not respond on whether they were considering making sanitary products freely available to customers.
What has my school done with this topic/issue?
In my school there is a female lead society. This is basically fighting for rights of women and girls! What they had come up with is wonderful. As we already know not all women/girls can afford period products. What they have done because of this to the bathroom is placed a little box in each bathroom. In each box there are tampons, pads as well as some baby wipes. I think this is a fabulous idea for those who may be on their period. But cannot afford period products or forget them! It has been a great addition to my school and I think it was a amazing idea.
One of my ideas to solve this issue:
I think it would be a great addition to all countries. If in each public bathroom, restaurant or supermarket bathroom there would be free tampons or pads. I think it would really help out the community and people who are struggling. Yet they want as well as need sanitary products.
