From the begging of Covid-19 when TikTok had started to become popular. More tags, like #depression, #anxiety had started to be in use by the viewers and creators on TikTok.
Creators creating educational videos
It started from harmless videos, made to spread awareness.
While most of these creators created videos like, “how its living with tourettes”, BPD, or ADHD. For educational purposes, to raise awareness. The symptoms of for example BPD, are similar to most teens. Not because they actually have BPD, but because they’re teens, still trying to figure who they are.
Self diagnose
They self diagnose, some out of simple lack of knowledge. Yet some out of the seek of attention. Seeing that so such attention is now shone on mentally illnesses, they want to be a part of it too.
Choosing mental illnesses, when its not a choice
Nowadays its almost a trend to be mentally ill. They choose like as if choosing what to eat today, what illness to have. Which is then disrespectful an just out of line for the people actually having to live with such a thing. Having depression and anxiety and other mentally illnesses so romanticized glorified now, as if its a flex to have. These people don’t understand that so much people for example with social anxiety. Genuinely cannot things they like out of fear of being watched, judged. Or for example, people romanticize and glorify depression until they realize, people cannot physically get out of bed, etc.
People misunderstanding
A creator can say if you have low concentrating level issues, you might have ADHD. And while that isn’t false, a lot of people can relate to that, yet not have ADHD and then go on flexing saying they too have ADHD.
TikTok turning serious issues, into trends.
Tiktok is turning mentally illnesses into a trend. People posting this like “omg i just found if you have the chills you have anxiety”. Its really just rude for the people actually struggling with the thins they, glorify, and create a trend. Nowadays it seems as if everyone has depression and every mental illness in the world, why? Because they saw a TikTok, so the decided to hop on the trend too.
